"Since Jim O'Neill made the BRICs prediction in 2001 enrollments in Portuguese have grown all over the US, including the creation of Portuguese programs at the Air Force Academy and Quantico, and the revitalization of the traditional West Point program which now counts with three assistant professors and three instructors of Portuguese.
The first three editions of the Simpósio sobre Ensino de Português para Falantes de Espanhol (SEPFE) were held at the University of Arizona (2003), at Stanford University (2006), and at Unicamp -- the University of Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil (2008). This fourth edition brings together scholars from seven different countries to discuss aspects of Portuguese for Spanish Speakers including acquisition, methodology and materials, bilingualism, and assessment. The IV SEPFE made space for two round tables on Portuguese as a Foreign Language, and Portuguese as a Heritage Language, a relatively new area.
The Symposium is also the appropriate venue to honor Dr. Clea Rameh who served the Department of Portuguese, and then the Department of Spanish and Portuguese for over forty years."
